Perennial forages in cold‐humid areas: Adaptation and resilience‐building strategies toward climate change

In the continental cold and humid areas of northeastern North America, climate change by mid-century may increase yield potential perennial forage species as a result increased temperature atmospheric CO2 concentration, longer growing season compared to 1990−2000 period. More winter thaws less snow cover along with more summer drought events, however, reduce survival regrowth, thus potentially reducing persistence forages over time. Based on nearly two decades research effects in through field experiments modeling, we summarize this review expected production terms yield, nutritive value, survival. We also propose set 12 adaptation resilience-building strategies for systems that can be implemented at farm levels. Research priorities future, including improvement species, management practices, modelling tools, are identified.
